Bumper Stickers... hmmm

"You Can't be Christian AND Pro-Choice" & "You can't be Christian AND a Democrat"

Both of these stickers were on the back of the same car here in MI. Here's a case in point for why I'm somewhat wary of organized religion. The 'big machine' wants to think FOR you. You don't need any intelligence of your own or even a personal relationship with your Creator, simply ascribe to the agenda of whatever given religion you choose to affiliate with and PRESTO, you are sure to be sainted!

I'm sure the one who posted these dogmatic bumper stickers meant well. However, the wisdom in these statements is about as logical as "You can't like the color purple and be an American". Sadly, it reminds me of the Nazi mentality "You Can't be a Jew AND be Human".
I'm a 'Choose Lifer'. I don't like abortion, I feel it's murdering an unborn human being. However, I'm not going to chant ugly slurs with a picket sign, harrass a clinic or blow up some Dr's house. Not every Pro-Choice person had an abortion or even would have one- many on the Pro-Choice side DON'T agree with abortion, but are simply wary of legislating morality. (Which leads to a whole other discussion...) Being Republican doesn't mean all our countries problems will be solved either. I'm a registered Independant. I vote for who I think is the best man/woman for the job- party lines aside. What do YOU think? Do you agree or disagree with the bumper stickers??

Hi TL - stuff like those bumper stickers drives me crazy... I second everything you said. For me, as a Christian, I still want the freedom to think for myself.

And I love your new bio picture you put up.

uqnktxxyIf the stickers are true, I don't want to be called Christian..I think I have moved about as far politically in the last two years as is possible. A conservative Republican for years, I've moved to the slight left of center. Not, however, far enough to be called a Democrat. I, like you, used to think of myself as an Independent. Now, I don't know. I am thoroughly disgusted with all politics and politicians. I'll let you know if I find a good one. I'm still trying to convince my 38 year old son that politics is not for him. Or any of us to be truthful. But, our country has grown beyond being able to be a democracy. We have been for some long time a federal republic, not a democracy as we all think. Kind of like the Roman Republic....Oh God, what have we done???We do remember what happened to Rome don't we.
My recent studies of quantum physics have renewed my faith that there may be hope for us yet. QF clearly points to intelligent design and an intelligence far beyond our own in control. Also, a interconnectedness of EVERYTHING in the universe. Sacredness for life of ALL kinds would lead to the belief that all life is God created. Therefore, an unborn is as valuable as good ole me and all the other fossils living on this earth. Eastern philosophy has it's problems just like any other. But, their belief in the sactity of all life is admirable.

narrow minded

it happens everywhere: republican/democrat
conservative/liberal
male/female
church goer/religion avoider

I could go on and on and on. I used to be narrow minded and sometimes am tempted by that at times again. However, God's grace is more abundant and I praise Him for that!

I may be different than everyone else, but I know I was in a different place in my faith journey 10 years ago than I am today. I believed some things then that I now totally disagree with. I think we need to remember that just because a Christian believes one thing today (and puts it on their bumper) does not mean the Lord might totally change their thinking tomorrow. Also, I do not look for ANY political party or government agency to "fix" anything or make life any better here on earth. Why would I trust people before God? I certainly believe Christians should be present in all areas of life including politics, I just try to remember that they are fallible just like me.
